Cape Sounion provides enthusiasts and novices with a tour packed with history and culture. Professional guides and a carefully constructed programme make this a favourite.

On departure from Piraeus we proceed  along Poseidon Avenue,  you will pass by the Stadium of Irinis & Filias and go through the aristocratic district of Glyfada.

A breathtaking scenic drive along the coast to Sounion then begins. There will be plenty of opportunity for your guide to show and give information about the sights and stop for photographs along the way.

The Temple of Poseidon, one of the most famous monuments in Greece, lies at the tip of Cape Sounion.  You will see the remains of walls fortified in 409 BC for the Peloponnesian War, the small Propylaia leading into the sanctuary, as well as 16 tall, graceful columns.

Built in 444-440 BC by the same architect responsible for The Temple of Hephaistos of the Athenian Agora and the temple of Nemesis at Ramnous, the temple originally was 6 columns wide and 13 columns long, constructed in such a way as to provide resistance to erosion by the sea elements, with a frieze sculptured on the architrave showing the exploits of various figures of Greek mythology. On the hill opposite the temple you will also observe the remains of the Sanctuary of Athena Sounio.

After the tour, we will drive back along the coast to the port of Piraeus.

We really enjoyed our guide and appreciated her knowledge and encouragement. We needed to go a little more slowly than some and since this was a private tour for us, she went our pace with no problem. When we got near the top of the Acropolis and Cape Sounion were a little unsure of going on without something to hang onto, she suggested we pause and rest. Then we were able to continue up. Well worth it and she didn’t want us to miss a thing.
