|VISITING||Athens City, Acropolis and Cape Sounio|
A beautifully constructed tour, Athens City Acropolis and Cape Sounio cannot fail to impress. History, Culture,Scenery and Atmosphere dictate that its an experience you will not forget.
After a short drive, you will have the opportunity to explore Athens, the cradle of the European civilization.
For twenty-five centuries, the cityscape has been dominated by the incredible Acropolis. We will help you explore the Acropolis and its principal buildings: the Propylaia, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and the magnificent Parthenon.
During your visit, you will also have some free time to spend as you wish. After the museum, we will continue with a panoramic tour of the city to see some of the other highlights of Athens.
Highlights such as the 6th century BC Olympieion (the Temple of Olympian Zeus), Hadrian’s Arch (2nd Century AD), and Syntagma Square, where the Royal Palace built for Otto I of Bavaria and the house of present day Parliament lie.
The Monument of the Unknown Soldier is located in front of the Palace, and two soldiers (Evzoni) stand guard at all times. We will also pass neoclassical buildings such as the University, Academy and Library before arriving at the Stadium designed by Lycurgus in the 4th Century BC and rebuilt in 1896 according to its original plan for the modern Olympic Games.
We will continue along Syngrou Avenue, after which we will enter Poseidon avenue and pass through the aristocratic district of Glyfada. During this scenic drive you will have the opportunity to take pictures not only of Athens’ important historical sites and districts, but also of the city’s enchanting coastline.
On the edge of the jagged coastline stands Cape Sounion, at the tip of which stands one of the most famous monuments in Greece: the Temple of Poseidon. You will see the remains of walls fortified in 409 BC for the Peloponnesian War, the small Propylaia leading into the sanctuary, as well as 16 tall, graceful columns. Built in 444-440 BC by the same architect responsible for The Temple of Hephaistos of the Athenian Agora and the temple of Nemesis at Ramnous, the temple originally was 6 columns wide and 13 columns long, constructed in such a way as to provide resistance to erosion by the sea elements, with a frieze sculptured on the architrave showing the exploits of various figures of Greek mythology.
On the hill opposite the temple you will also observe the remains of the Sanctuary of Athena Sounio. After your visit you will have some free time for refreshments at the on-site cafeteria or for photography, taking in the magnificent view to the Aegean sea and the temple of Poseidon. After all of this, we will provide transportation back to the port of Piraeus along a picturesque seaside road.
