December 13, 2015

We were on a family vacation doing a 9 day cruise. Our ports included Katakolo and Piraeus, Greece. Kusadasi and Istanbul, Turkey and Naples, Italy. My husband had arranged Ada Vegas Travel for our tour guides in Turkey.

The ship docked in Kusadasi and we disembarked from the ship, Ilker was waiting for us exactly at 8. He started off by giving us some history of Turkey while going to our first stop at the House of Virgin Mary. He mentioned that it would get busy at that location so we got there early before the crowds. I thought it was interesting what Ilker said the Virgin Mary is mentioned in the Koran more times than the bible.

Our next stop was to Ephesus. It was an incredible sight and the history of it was equally incredible. The discovery of the 7 Terrace Houses and how people had lived thousands of years ago. They were very advanced for their time.

Ilker took us to Demiroglu Baklavalari to buy some delicious, but sweet baklava and ice cream made with goats milk. We shopped and he showed us around town. We went to Agora Restaurant for lunch. We had a typical Turkish lunch with yogurt with eggplant, eggplant with oil, a spicy spread and bread. We ate marinated chicken, tomatoes, grilled onions and pepper and a thin like flat bread to wrap everything up in. All the dishes were so delicious and authentic. Plus, the restaurant that didn’t have any tourists except for us. On our way back to the ship, he brought us to Tahmisciogullari to buy apple tea that we had come to love. It was a small but cute store that had dried spices hanging from the ceiling and in bins on the floor. We barely made it back to the ship before casting off.

It was a fun and enjoyable day. We learned a lot about Turkey and tried some great food. I highly recommend Ilker Avci for your next tour guide. He’s easy going, funny and he enjoys his job. We can’t wait to come back again to Turkey, thank you Ilker!
