We spent a fantastic three days touring Istanbul with our guide Emrecan Kurt. The first two days were spent seeing the more standard tourist side of Istanbul; the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern (our children’s favorite!), Topkapi Palace, the Hippodrome, Suleymaniye Mosque, the Dolmabahce Palace, and The Church of Cora. These sites were all fabulous and we all appreciated Emrecan’s knowledgeable insights into each place as well as her amazing iPhone camera skills (I even acquired some great tips for taking photos in dark places!). On the third day we decided on the Europe and Asia Walk, which was truly a highlight of our trip. Emrecan took us to some of his favorite places in Istanbul on the European and Asian side. Navigating by metro and minibus due to heavy fog that cancelled the ferry service, we saw a bit of the “real” Istanbul where residents go to shop, eat and relax. He also guided us through the Spice Market and Grand Bazaar, helping my 7 year old find the perfect souvenir—a puzzle box to store all his treasures, and my husband and I find the perfect gifts for family and friends in the states. A highlight of all three days were the restaurants Emrecan took us to for lunch. All different and all delicious!! Throughout our time in Istanbul, Emrecan went out of her way to accommodate our request to see specific sites and even tracked down a charger for my camera when I neglected to bring one with me. she was especially good with our children, explaining things in a way that they could understand and exhibiting apparently boundless patience with my son’s constant stream questions. All of us learned so much—from theories about the origin and positioning of the Medusa pillars in the Cistern to the longstanding rivalry between Istanbul’s two football teams–Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray SK. We highly recommend both the company, Istanbul Guided Tours—and Emrecan —one of the best tour guides ever!!!
